I’ve been reading a piece in the New Yorker about quantum physics, trying to wrap my head around a reality where things are in two places in once, can influence each other from a distance, and be changed by observation. It occurs to me that southern families are like this. We exist as complex organisms with information appearing to be shared across space and time. Our relatives exist in simultaneous and contradictory states: good Christians and determined bigots. We’re told to mold our behavior and beliefs by what other people will think, and thus are changed by observation.
